A warm power point, a breaker that keeps tripping or a lead with tape around it can look like a small problem. It is not. The top electrical safety checks are about spotting those warning signs before they become a shock, a fire, damaged equipment or an expensive work stoppage.
For homes, shops, sheds and active building sites across the Coffs Coast and Mid North Coast, electrical safety comes down to two things: regular visual checks by the people using the space, and proper inspection or repair by a licensed electrician when something is not right. Here is where to focus.
Start at the switchboard
Your switchboard is the control point for the property. Open the door and look for clear circuit labels, tidy wiring, blank covers over unused openings and no obvious heat damage, corrosion or loose components. A burning smell, buzzing sound, black marks or a board that feels warm needs prompt attention. Do not remove covers or touch internal components yourself.
Check that safety switches, also known as RCDs, protect the relevant circuits. These devices are designed to cut power quickly when they detect an electrical fault, reducing the risk of serious shock. Most manufacturers recommend using the test button regularly, commonly every three months, but always follow the instructions on the device. Pressing the button should switch the circuit off. Reset it only if it operates normally.
If the safety switch will not reset, keeps tripping, or trips when a particular appliance is used, do not keep forcing it back on. Unplug portable appliances on that circuit and arrange a fault check. Repeated tripping is doing its job - it is telling you something needs investigation.
Older homes often have boards that were suitable when the house had one television, a fridge and a few basic appliances. Add air conditioning, induction cooking, pool equipment, solar, workshop tools and EV charging, and capacity can become an issue. A switchboard upgrade may be the safer, cleaner option where circuits are overloaded, protection is outdated or future additions are planned.
Check outlets, switches and fixed wiring
Power points and light switches should sit firmly against the wall, with no cracks, discolouration, sparking, popping sounds or heat. Plugs should fit securely. A loose outlet can create arcing inside the fitting, generating heat where you cannot see it.
Pay particular attention to high-use areas: kitchens, laundries, garages, workshops and outdoor entertaining spaces. Moisture, steam, dust and physical damage put more pressure on fittings in these locations. Outdoor outlets need suitable weather protection, and fittings near pools or wet areas have additional requirements. This is not an area for improvised covers or DIY alterations.
Lights that flicker can be as simple as a failing globe, but they can also point to a loose connection, incompatible dimmer or supply issue. If multiple lights flicker, lights brighten and dim unexpectedly, or you notice tingling from a tap or metal fitting, switch off power where safe and call a licensed electrician straight away.
Fixed wiring is mostly hidden, which is why renovation work deserves care. Before drilling into walls, chasing cables or cutting into ceilings, consider what may be behind the surface. In older properties, wiring may not follow the neat routes you expect. A professional can locate services and plan the work without turning a simple hanging job into a live-wire incident.
Inspect leads and appliances where they are used
Portable equipment gets moved, dropped, dragged across concrete and stored in damp sheds. That makes visual inspection practical and worthwhile. Look over extension leads, appliance cords, chargers and power boards before use, especially on tools that live in a ute, garage or site box.
Remove damaged equipment from service rather than wrapping it in tape and carrying on. Watch for these common faults:
split, crushed, frayed or exposed cable
bent pins, cracked plugs or loose plug tops
scorched sockets, discolouration or melting around connections
cords run through doorways, under rugs or across driveways where they can be damaged
overloaded power boards and double adaptors.
Use power boards with overload protection where appropriate, but remember they do not increase the capacity of the circuit behind them. High-draw appliances such as heaters, kettles, microwaves, dryers and workshop equipment should not be stacked onto one board. If you regularly rely on extension leads or adapters to make a space work, more fixed outlets may be the better long-term solution.
On commercial premises and construction sites, test and tag may be required under your workplace procedures or risk controls. The label alone is not a guarantee of safety. Staff should still check equipment before using it, and damaged gear should be isolated immediately.
Keep water, outdoor power and weather in the picture
Electrical faults and water are a bad mix, particularly after heavy rain, flooding or storm damage. Check outdoor fittings, shed supplies, garden lighting, pool equipment and exposed cables for water entry or physical damage. Never handle fallen powerlines, damaged service lines or electrical equipment sitting in water. Keep clear, prevent others from approaching and contact the relevant emergency service or electricity network provider.
After a flood or significant water ingress, do not switch circuits back on just to see what still works. Electrical equipment, wiring connections and underground joints may have been compromised. A licensed electrician should assess the installation before it is re-energised.
For rural blocks, renovations and light civil works, overhead and underground services need equal respect. Before excavation, trenching, fence-post digging or footing work, identify underground assets and plan the exclusion areas. Existing electrical cables can be shallower or routed differently than expected, particularly around older homes and additions. One damaged cable can stop a project, create a serious hazard and add avoidable repair costs.
Make electrical safety part of site planning
The best electrical checks on a building site happen before machinery arrives. Temporary power needs to be protected from weather, traffic, excavation and unauthorised access. Leads should be routed to avoid walkways and plant movements, and temporary boards need appropriate protection and secure placement.
Builders and project managers should also consider sequencing. Underground electrical runs, conduits, communications and drainage need to be coordinated before trenches are backfilled or slabs are poured. It is much easier to install the right conduit depth, separation and draw points during site works than to reopen finished ground later.

Know when a check becomes a call-out

The line is simple: if a cover needs removing, a circuit needs testing, new wiring is required or the cause is unclear, book a professional.
Call urgently if you have burning smells, smoke, shocks or tingling, exposed live parts, a damaged switchboard, repeated RCD trips, storm-damaged supply equipment or a fallen line. Turn off power at the main switch only if it is safe to do so, keep people away from the affected area and do not attempt a temporary repair.
Electrical safety is not about making a property look compliant for one day. It is about giving faults nowhere to hide, keeping people safe and making sure the power you rely on is built to handle the work you ask of it.
