A new shed can look simple on a site plan: run power from the house, trench across the yard, connect it up. In practice, an underground service run project example shows why the job needs more than a machine and a cable. Existing services, ground conditions, electrical load, drainage, access and final reinstatement all need to work together from the start.
For a homeowner, builder or small business owner, the best result is a service run that is safe, compliant, protected from damage and ready for how the space will actually be used. That is where combining licensed electrical work with precise excavation makes a real difference.
Underground service run project example: a detached shed
Consider a typical Mid North Coast property with an existing home and a new detached shed positioned around 35 metres from the main switchboard. The owner wants lighting, general power outlets, a roller door circuit and capacity for a future welder or small air-conditioner. The preferred route crosses a lawn area, passes near a garden bed and finishes at the shed slab.
The visible part of the job is the trench. The important work happens before the first bucket goes in.
The electrical contractor first assesses the existing switchboard and the expected load in the shed. A few lights and power points may need a very different supply to a workshop with higher-demand equipment. Allowing for future use at this stage can avoid digging up a finished yard later. It may mean selecting a larger cable, allowing spare capacity in the sub-board, or planning conduit space for communications or another service.
At the same time, the site is inspected for access, slope, drainage and known underground assets. Service locations must be identified before excavation starts. On an established property, this can include water, sewer, stormwater, communications, pool equipment and older electrical cables that do not always follow the most obvious route. Plans are useful, but they are not a substitute for careful locating and safe excavation practices.
Planning the route before trenching
The shortest line is not always the right line. In this example, the direct route to the shed would cut through mature garden roots and cross an area likely to be used for future landscaping. A slightly longer route along the side boundary gives cleaner access for the excavator, keeps the cable away from roots and makes the run easier to identify and maintain.
This decision also considers where the cable enters each building. A neat, protected entry point prevents awkward surface conduit, avoids trip hazards and keeps the finished job looking intentional. Where the run meets a driveway, retaining wall or other hard surface, the installation method may need to change. Boring, deeper protection or alternative routing can be more sensible than opening up finished concrete.
Depth, cable protection, warning tape and conduit requirements depend on the installation, the location and applicable standards. There is no one-depth answer that fits every job. Areas exposed to vehicle traffic, garden tools or future excavation need particular attention. A licensed contractor designs the installation around the site rather than relying on a rule of thumb.
Excavation with the electrical work in mind
Once the route is marked and services have been addressed, excavation can begin. For a domestic service run, a compact excavator often provides the right balance of accuracy and efficiency. It can work along fences, around landscaping and through tighter access areas without turning the whole property into a construction zone.
The trench is excavated to suit the approved cable installation method, with a clean base that will not damage the cable or conduit. Loose rock, sharp rubble and poor bedding are dealt with before the electrical components go in. This is not cosmetic work. A cable installed on rough material can be at risk long after the lawn has grown back.
Ground conditions on the Coffs Coast and surrounding areas can change quickly from one part of a block to another. Sandy soil may be straightforward to excavate but can slump into an open trench. Clay can hold water. Rock can slow progress and affect the route or depth. A capable operator adjusts the approach on site, communicates the issue early and avoids forcing a solution that compromises the installation.
Excavation and electrical work being coordinated by the same contractor removes a common source of delay. The person digging understands the required route, protection and entry points. The electrician understands what the machine needs to achieve. There is less handover risk, less guesswork and a clearer line of responsibility for the completed run.
Installing the underground electrical service
With the trench prepared, the cable or conduit system is installed to the designed route. The exact arrangement depends on the electrical design, site conditions and future needs. In some cases, cable is installed in conduit for added mechanical protection and easier future replacement. In others, the cable type and burial method are selected for the specific environment.
The installation should be supported by appropriate bedding and mechanical protection, followed by warning tape at the required level before backfilling. The warning tape is a simple but valuable safeguard. If someone digs in the area years later, it provides an early warning before they reach the service.
At the house end, the circuit is connected through suitable protection at the main switchboard or distribution point. At the shed, a sub-board may be installed to supply separate circuits for lighting, outlets and fixed equipment. This is where load calculations and planning pay off. A shed supplied by a properly designed sub-board is safer, easier to isolate and better suited to future additions than a makeshift extension of the home circuit.
Earthing, bonding, fault protection and testing are not optional finishings. They are core parts of the electrical installation. Before energising, the electrician tests the cable and circuits, checks protection devices and confirms the installation operates as intended. Electrical work must be completed by a licensed electrician and documented in line with NSW requirements.
Backfilling and reinstatement matter
A service run should not leave a site looking like a trenching project for months. After inspection and testing, the trench is backfilled carefully in layers, protecting the installed service and reducing the chance of later settlement. Spoil is managed properly, and the area is reinstated as close as practical to its original condition.
For this shed example, that may mean levelling the lawn, returning topsoil, tidying the garden edge and leaving a clean entry point at the building. If the route crosses a construction site rather than an established yard, reinstatement may be coordinated with the builder's next stage of works. The right finish depends on the project, but the principle stays the same: leave the site ready for what comes next.
What can change the scope and cost?
An underground service run is not priced accurately from distance alone. The length of the trench is one factor, but site access, soil and rock, cable size, switchboard capacity, hard-surface crossings and the final equipment in the shed can all change the scope.
A straightforward 20-metre run through open soil is different from a 20-metre run beneath a driveway, through rock or across a yard with multiple existing services. Likewise, a basic garden studio has different electrical needs to a workshop with heavy equipment. Clear site information and an on-site assessment help produce transparent pricing and avoid surprises once work is underway.
It is also worth considering future works. If a trench is already open, it can be practical to allow for communications conduit, an extra draw wire or other approved services. That does not mean adding unnecessary cost. It means making sensible decisions while access is available, particularly where the route will later be covered by concrete, landscaping or new structures.
