A new build can have footings poured and frames booked, but it cannot run properly without safe, usable power on site. Builders temporary site power is the early electrical setup that gives trades a reliable supply for tools, lighting, site amenities and construction work before the permanent installation is ready. Get it wrong, and the job can lose time before the first wall goes up.
Temporary power is not simply a switchboard on a pole. It needs to suit the site layout, the planned construction sequence, the local network connection requirements and the work being carried out. A well-planned supply keeps the project moving. A poorly located or undersized one creates hazards, extension-lead clutter, repeat visits and unnecessary cost.
What builders temporary site power needs to do
A temporary builders supply provides electricity during construction while the permanent home, commercial premises or development is still being built. In most cases, it includes a meter panel or temporary switchboard, main switch and protective devices, weatherproof outlets and a suitable connection arrangement for the network supply.
The exact setup depends on the job. A straightforward house build may only need power for small tools, a concrete crew, a site shed and basic lighting. A larger build with several trades working at once, machinery chargers, welders, pumps or temporary site offices may need greater capacity, more outlet locations or three-phase power.
The key is to plan for the work that will actually happen, not just the first few days on site. It is cheaper and cleaner to allow for likely demand early than to find the temporary supply is constantly tripping once the build gains pace.
Start planning before the site is busy
Temporary power should be considered alongside the site plan, driveway access, excavation, water connection and build programme. Leaving it until the slab is ready often means trades are waiting for a connection, or the board ends up installed wherever there happens to be room.
Location matters. The temporary board needs to be accessible for meter work and safe use by trades, but it should not sit in the path of excavation, deliveries, scaffolding, cranes or future landscaping. It also needs to be protected from vehicle damage and positioned so leads do not have to cross driveways, access tracks or wet ground wherever possible.
On sloping, tight or rural sites around the Coffs Coast and Mid North Coast, this planning becomes even more important. Soft ground, drainage paths, limited frontage and overhead services can all affect where equipment can safely go. The best position on a flat suburban block may be completely unsuitable on a bush block or a site with significant cut and fill.
A contractor who understands both electrical work and excavation can coordinate the practical details early. That includes establishing a stable location, planning the service route and avoiding a situation where freshly completed groundworks need to be reopened to install electrical infrastructure.
Check the construction sequence
Ask a simple question: what needs power first, and what will need it six weeks from now? The answer shapes the installation.
Early on, the supply may run handheld tools and a site shed. Soon after, it may need to support concrete works, framing crews, security lighting, plumbers, cabinetmakers and charging equipment. If the temporary power is installed too close to the building footprint, it can become inaccessible once materials, fencing and scaffolding arrive.
It also pays to consider the changeover to permanent power. The temporary arrangement should support the build without making the final connection more difficult. Good sequencing reduces rework and keeps the handover stage from becoming a last-minute scramble.
Safety is built into the setup
Construction sites are hard on electrical equipment. There is moisture, dust, traffic, rough handling and plenty of people who may need to plug in at once. Temporary electrical equipment must be installed, protected and maintained for those conditions.
A compliant temporary board uses appropriate circuit protection and weatherproof equipment. Outlets and leads need to be suitable for site use, and electrical work must be completed by a licensed electrician. The supply should also be inspected and tested as required, particularly when equipment has been damaged, altered or exposed to harsh conditions.
The common problems are usually practical rather than complicated: leads running through puddles, damaged outlet covers, overloaded power boards, temporary boards knocked by plant, or a supply hidden behind stored materials. Each one is avoidable with sensible placement, proper protection and regular site checks.
Builders and site supervisors should make temporary power part of their routine walk-through. If something looks damaged, loose, wet or improvised, stop using it and get it checked. A quick repair is far better than an injury, a failed inspection or a lost day of work.
Size the supply for the real load
Undersizing temporary power is one of the most frustrating mistakes on a construction site. A circuit that handles a few drills may not handle a saw, compressor, battery chargers and site amenities all operating at the same time.
Before installation, consider the likely electrical loads and whether any equipment requires three-phase supply. Trades do not always work one at a time, especially during busy stages of a build. The board should provide enough capacity and outlet access for normal operations while maintaining proper protection between circuits.
There is a trade-off here. Over-specifying a small, short-duration build can add cost without much benefit. Under-specifying a larger or longer project creates disruption and can require an upgrade later. The right answer comes from the scope, duration and work programme, not a one-size-fits-all package.
Do not rely on long extension leads
Long leads may seem like an easy fix when the board is too far from the work area. In practice, they create trip hazards, voltage drop concerns, damage risks and a cluttered site. They are particularly troublesome where vehicles, wet weather and uneven ground are part of the job.
Where power is needed across a broad site, it is usually better to plan distribution properly rather than keep adding leads and adapters. This is especially relevant for renovations, multi-dwelling work, sheds set well back from the road and rural projects with substantial distances between the connection point and work zone.
Coordinate underground services before trenching
Temporary power often involves a service route from the network connection point to the temporary board. That route needs to be considered with water, communications, stormwater, sewer and any future permanent electrical trenching.
Before digging, identify existing services and confirm the proposed path. Never assume a clear-looking section of ground is free of cables or pipes. Service locations, minimum clearances, depths and installation methods matter, and they must be managed by people who understand the relevant requirements.

Clear communication between the builder, owner, electrician and relevant network parties is the practical safeguard. Confirm who is arranging the connection, who is responsible for site access, where the board will be located and when power is required. Small gaps in responsibility are often what cause avoidable delays.

It is the one that is properly located, safely installed, fit for the expected load and coordinated with the groundworks and permanent electrical plan.
