Temporary Power for Safe, Productive Worksites

A site can be excavated, framed and ready for the next trade, yet still lose a full day because there is nowhere safe to plug in a tool. Temporary power is not an afterthought on a build, renovation or civil job. It is the working electrical system that keeps crews moving before the permanent supply is connected.

For homeowners, builders and project managers, the goal is simple: get reliable power where it is needed, protect people and equipment, and avoid creating a messy setup that has to be redone halfway through the job. That takes more than running a few leads from the nearest outlet.

What temporary power needs to do

Temporary power can support a new home build, a commercial fit-out, a site shed, dewatering equipment, security lighting, tools, pumps or an event setup. The right solution depends on the load required, how long the work will run, the condition of the site and whether permanent mains power is available.

A small internal renovation may only need a properly protected supply for hand tools and lighting. A new build or subdivision site may need a temporary site board, metering arrangements, multiple protected outlets and a plan for cables as earthworks, concrete and framing progress. Where mains connection is delayed or impractical, a generator may be the sensible option, provided it is sized, positioned and connected correctly.

The common mistake is treating all these jobs the same. A setup that is adequate for a painter working inside an occupied house is not suitable for a wet, busy construction site with several trades using high-draw equipment. Good planning matches the supply to the actual work, not just the first tool expected on site.

Safe temporary power starts with the site plan

Before equipment arrives, look at the work sequence. Where will the site office sit? Which areas will be excavated? When will access change? Will delivery vehicles cross the path of leads? Is the site exposed to rain, mud or standing water? These details determine where a temporary board, generator and outlets can safely sit.

The supply needs to be accessible to the people using it, but protected from damage. Cables laid across a driveway, buried without planning, draped through puddles or run through doorways where they can be crushed are not minor issues. They create trip hazards, damage insulation and make fault finding harder when time is already tight.

A licensed electrician should assess the supply point, expected load, protection requirements and earthing arrangements. On construction and demolition sites, temporary electrical installations have specific requirements under Australian standards, including suitable residual current device protection and regular inspection and testing of leads and equipment. The exact scope depends on the site and installation, but the principle does not change: if conditions are tougher, protection needs to be better.

Load matters more than most people expect

Power demand adds up quickly. Battery chargers and LED work lights draw little, while welders, compressors, large pumps, concrete tools, refrigeration and multiple site amenities can place serious demand on a temporary supply.

Undersizing a generator or temporary board often shows up as nuisance tripping, voltage drop, tools running poorly or equipment failing to start. Oversizing everything without a plan can also waste money. A practical electrician will identify the likely peak load, allow for motor starting loads where relevant, and leave room for the next stage of work.

It is also worth separating critical loads where possible. If a pump, refrigeration unit or security system cannot stop, it should not be competing with every extension lead and power tool on the job.

Site boards, generators and leads each have a place

Where mains electricity is available, a temporary site board is often the cleanest option. It gives trades a central, protected point for power and allows the installation to be configured around the job. As the build progresses, the board or distribution points may need to move or expand.

Generators suit remote blocks, short-term works and situations where connection to the network is not yet available. They bring their own considerations: fuel management, noise, ventilation, weather protection, security, earthing and safe connection. A generator parked too close to work areas can introduce fumes, noise and access problems. One set too far away can leave leads exposed across the site.

Extension leads are useful, but they should never become the whole electrical plan. Use suitable heavy-duty leads, keep connections off the ground where practical, protect them from vehicle traffic and inspect them regularly. Damaged leads, taped repairs and overloaded double adaptors have no place on a professional worksite.

Coordinate underground work before power goes live

This is where integrated electrical and excavation capability makes a real difference. Temporary power often needs to cross the same site that is being trenched, levelled, compacted or prepared for footings. If those scopes are handled separately without clear communication, cables can end up in the way of machinery or temporary trenches can be reopened after surfaces are finished.

Planning the electrical route alongside excavation works reduces rework. It allows for safe service runs, sensible locations for future permanent switchboards, clear separation from other services and a better transition from temporary supply to the final installation.

For example, a new home site may need temporary power at the front boundary early in the build, then a permanent underground service run once levels, driveway locations and landscaping plans are confirmed. Getting the sequence right protects the work already completed and avoids the familiar problem of digging up a finished area because a service was left until last.

Before any digging starts, existing services must be identified and the work area assessed. Assumptions around underground cables, water lines or communications services are expensive and potentially dangerous. A proper plan is faster than repairing a strike.

Keep temporary installations tidy as the job changes

A temporary setup should not be installed once and ignored. Construction sites change quickly. Frames go up, access shifts, trades multiply and weather turns a clean block into a muddy one. What was a safe cable route on Monday may be a vehicle crossing by Friday.

Regular checks should cover the condition of leads and plugs, weatherproofing, RCD operation, board access, cable routing and whether the current supply still meets the site load. Any damage, repeated tripping or signs of overheating should be investigated rather than worked around.

Site housekeeping matters here. Keep boards clear of stored materials, do not block access with pallets or spoil piles, and make sure workers know where isolation points are. Clear labelling and an organised layout make emergencies easier to manage and routine work more efficient.

For occupied homes and businesses, the same approach applies with extra care around occupants. Temporary supplies may need to maintain essential lighting, refrigeration, communications or business equipment while upgrades are underway. The work should be staged to minimise downtime, with isolations explained clearly before they happen.

Choosing the right contractor for temporary power

Temporary electrical work sits at the intersection of safety, scheduling and site logistics. The cheapest option is not always the best value if it leaves trades waiting, creates repeated call-outs or has to be dismantled and rebuilt because it was poorly positioned.

Look for a licensed and insured contractor who can assess the whole site, not just install an outlet. They should ask what equipment will be used, how long the setup is needed, what conditions it will face and how it connects with planned trenching, excavation or permanent electrical works. They should also communicate clearly about access, shutdowns, testing and any changes required as the project develops.
