A switchboard that trips once can be annoying. One that keeps cutting power is telling you something needs attention. If you are asking, why does my switchboard keep tripping, the answer is usually not the switchboard itself. It is doing its job by cutting power when it detects a fault, overload or potentially dangerous electrical condition.
The key is working out what has changed, without repeatedly resetting a safety device and hoping it holds. A licensed electrician can trace the cause properly, repair it safely and make sure your installation remains compliant.
What a tripping switchboard is trying to protect you from
Modern switchboards use circuit breakers and safety switches, also called RCDs, to disconnect electricity before a fault can cause electric shock, overheating or fire. They may look similar, but they respond to different problems.
A circuit breaker generally trips when a circuit is overloaded or there is a short circuit. Think too many high-draw appliances running on one power circuit, or damaged wiring allowing active and neutral conductors to touch.
A safety switch trips when it detects electricity leaking to earth. This can happen through a faulty appliance, damaged cable, moisture in an outdoor fitting or wiring fault. It reacts very quickly because leakage current can be dangerous to people.
Older homes may have fuses rather than breakers, or a mix of older and newer protection. Either way, a protection device that keeps operating should be treated as a fault to investigate, not an inconvenience to bypass.
Why does my switchboard keep tripping? Common causes
The pattern of the trips often provides a useful starting point. Does it happen when you turn on one appliance? Only during rain? When the air conditioner starts? Or after several appliances have been operating at once?
An overloaded circuit
Overloading is common in older homes, garages, workshops and small commercial spaces where the electrical layout no longer matches how the building is used. A single circuit may be supplying several power points, lighting, a fridge and outdoor equipment. Add a kettle, microwave, heater or power tool and the circuit can exceed its safe capacity.
Portable heaters, electric ovens, clothes dryers, air conditioners and EV chargers can all place a significant load on an installation. Extension leads and power boards do not create extra capacity. They only allow more equipment to be connected to the same circuit.
An overload may be an occasional issue, but regular tripping can also indicate that the property needs additional circuits or a switchboard upgrade. The right solution depends on the cable size, circuit protection, existing demand and plans for the property.
A faulty appliance
A single appliance is often the culprit, particularly if the safety switch trips as soon as it is plugged in or switched on. Appliances with heating elements or motors are common offenders. Kettles, toasters, washing machines, dishwashers, pumps, fridges, freezers and older power tools can develop faults that leak current to earth.
Damaged leads, crushed cords, loose plugs and signs of heat around a plug are also red flags. Do not continue using an appliance that trips the switchboard, gives a tingling sensation or has a burning smell. Unplug it and arrange repair, replacement or electrical testing.
Water or moisture getting into electrical equipment

A problem with the circuit or switchboard
Circuit breakers and RCDs can wear out or become unsuitable for an altered installation, but they are less commonly the root cause than the wiring or equipment they protect. An ageing switchboard may lack enough circuits, modern safety switches or capacity for additions such as air conditioning, solar, a pool, workshop equipment or a renovation.
A switchboard assessment looks beyond the immediate trip. It checks circuit loading, condition of connections, protection devices, earthing arrangements and whether the board is fit for the way the property is now used.
Safe checks you can make before calling an electrician
You do not need to pull covers off a switchboard or handle electrical wiring to gather useful information. If there is no smell of burning, visible damage, sparking or water around electrical equipment, you can take a few basic steps.
Note which switch has tripped and what label is beside it, such as lights, power, hot water or shed.
Turn off and unplug appliances on the affected circuit, especially anything recently used or newly connected.
Reset the switch once, then reconnect appliances one at a time to see whether a particular item causes it to trip.
Record whether the issue follows rain, a particular time of day, use of a high-load appliance or operation of an outdoor circuit.
If the switch trips immediately with everything unplugged, leave it off. That points more strongly to a wiring or fixed-equipment fault. The same applies if a breaker will not reset, trips repeatedly or the switchboard feels hot.
Never hold a breaker in the on position, fit a larger breaker yourself or replace a fuse with an incorrect item. These actions can remove the protection that is preventing cable damage, electric shock or fire.
When the issue needs urgent attention
Some switchboard faults cannot wait for a convenient booking. Turn off power at the main switch if it is safe to do so and seek urgent licensed electrical help if you notice burning smells, buzzing, smoke, scorch marks, melted plastic, sparks or a hot switchboard cover.
Treat water near the switchboard, meter box or electrical wiring seriously. Keep clear of damaged service cables and do not touch fallen lines, even if they appear inactive. If there is an immediate threat to life or property, contact emergency services and the electricity network operator.
For less obvious but persistent tripping, booking a licensed electrician is still the sensible move. The right repair depends on the actual fault
There is no one-size-fits-all fix. Replacing a faulty kettle is very different from repairing water-damaged outdoor wiring. An overloaded kitchen circuit may need a new dedicated circuit, while an old board may need a planned upgrade to safely support current and future electrical demand.
For renovations and new builds, it pays to plan power needs before walls are closed or trenches are backfilled. Dedicated circuits for larger loads, correctly positioned outdoor outlets and protected underground service runs can prevent nuisance tripping and costly rework later.
