
Practical Guide to Temporary Construction Power

A site can have the slab down, materials delivered and trades booked, then lose days because there is no safe power where it is needed. This guide to temporary construction power explains what needs to happen before tools, site sheds and temporary lighting can run reliably. Done properly, temporary power protects people, keeps work moving and avoids expensive rework when the permanent supply is ready.
What temporary construction power is for
Temporary construction power is the electrical supply installed to support a build before the permanent switchboard, metering arrangement and final fit-off are complete. It may feed a site shed, battery chargers, power tools, pumps, concrete equipment, security lighting and trade-specific machinery.
It is not simply a long lead from an existing house or neighbour's property. Construction sites change quickly, work outdoors in wet conditions and have higher risks of impact damage, exposed cables and untrained people using equipment. The supply needs to be designed for the job, installed by a licensed electrician and maintained while the site evolves.
For a small renovation, the existing supply may be suitable for limited, controlled use. A new home, commercial tenancy or light civil project will often need a dedicated temporary builder's supply. The right option depends on the available network connection, expected loads, project duration and the sequence of works.
Start planning before the first trade arrives
Temporary power is easiest to organise during site preparation, not when the carpenter needs to run saws the next morning. The early conversation should include the builder, electrician, excavation contractor and, where required, the electricity distributor.
First, establish whether power is already available at the boundary and whether an overhead or underground connection is practical. A new connection may require approvals, metering equipment and coordination with the network provider. Lead times can vary, so this is not a task to leave until the week before construction starts.
Next, work out what the site will actually draw. A basic site shed and hand tools have very different requirements from a project running welders, compressors, hoists, dewatering pumps or large temporary lighting. Allowing for future loads at the start can prevent nuisance tripping and avoid replacing equipment halfway through the build.
Map the site around the work, not just the boundary
The temporary switchboard needs a location that is accessible, visible and protected from damage. It should not sit where trucks will reverse, where spoil will be stockpiled or where future scaffolding and fencing will block access.
This is where coordinated electrical and earthworks planning makes a real difference. Before trenching begins, confirm service locations, cable routes, required depths and where the final driveway, footings and drainage will go. A cable route that looks convenient on an empty block can become a problem once excavation, retaining or concrete works begin.
If cables need to cross vehicle routes, they need suitable mechanical protection. If they are underground, they must be installed in accordance with the applicable requirements and clearly recorded before backfilling. Never assume a cable is safe because it is out of sight.
Choose a setup that suits the job
Most building projects use a weather-resistant temporary distribution board, often called a builder's pole or temporary site board. It provides protected outlets and separates the construction supply from the eventual permanent installation.
For some renovations, a temporary board may be supplied from an existing compliant switchboard. This can be efficient when the existing installation has capacity and the work area can be safely separated. It is not always the cheapest option once cable protection, board upgrades and the risk of disrupting occupants are considered.
A dedicated temporary supply is usually the cleaner choice for new builds. It gives trades a known connection point, keeps construction loads away from a completed dwelling and can remain available while internal electrical work is underway. Where mains connection timing is uncertain, a generator may be useful for short-term tasks, but it brings its own fuel, noise, earthing and maintenance considerations. It is not a substitute for a properly planned site supply on a longer project.
Protection is not optional
Temporary installations are exposed to hard use. Every outlet circuit needs appropriate protection, including safety switches, commonly referred to as RCDs. These devices reduce the risk of electric shock by disconnecting supply when a fault is detected, but they do not make damaged leads or unsafe behaviour acceptable.
The board should be weatherproof, securely mounted and capable of being locked or controlled when the site is unattended. Outlets, leads and portable tools should be inspected regularly, particularly after heavy rain, a storm, excavation nearby or an incident involving plant.
Leads must be kept out of puddles, away from sharp edges and clear of accessways where possible. Running extension leads through doorways, across driveways or under building materials creates both electrical and trip hazards. A few minutes spent setting up safe cable paths is cheaper than a damaged lead, a tripped worker or a stalled day on site.
Keep people safe as the site changes
A temporary electrical installation is not a set-and-forget item. The risk profile changes as framing goes up, roofs go on, scaffolding arrives and multiple trades share the same spaces.
Wet weather deserves particular attention on the Coffs Coast and Mid North Coast. Rain, mud and outdoor work are normal parts of construction, but water and damaged electrical equipment are a dangerous combination. If outlets, boards or leads show damage, stop using them and arrange inspection by a licensed electrician. Do not wrap damaged cables in tape and carry on.
Overhead powerlines also need to be identified before plant, ladders, scaffolds or long materials are brought onto site. Excavators, tippers and concrete pumps can all create serious risks around overhead assets. Underground services are equally important. Dial-before-you-dig information, physical location of services and careful excavation are essential before any trench or footing work begins.
Clear responsibility helps. The builder or site manager should know who can access the board, who reports faults and who authorises changes. Trades should not add outlets, alter protection devices or connect makeshift wiring to solve a convenience issue. If more power is needed, assess the load and upgrade the temporary arrangement properly.
Allow for testing, compliance and handover
In NSW, electrical construction work must be carried out by appropriately licensed people and comply with relevant rules, standards and network requirements. A compliant setup is more than a tidy-looking board. It involves correct design, installation, testing and the required documentation for the work completed.
Ask your electrical contractor how the temporary supply will be tested, what records will be provided and what happens when it is time to transition to permanent power. The temporary board may need to be removed, isolated or reconfigured as the permanent switchboard is commissioned. Planning that handover early avoids a frustrating gap between practical completion and final electrical connection.
It also pays to protect the final installation from construction damage. Permanent outlets and lighting can be tempting for trades once they are installed, but they may not be ready for unrestricted site use. A dedicated temporary supply for as long as practical keeps the finished electrical work cleaner and reduces defects at handover.
Budget for the factors that actually change cost
There is no useful one-price answer for temporary construction power. Costs depend on the distance to the point of connection, whether metering or network work is required, site access, cable route, trenching, board size, expected loads and project duration.
A difficult block can add genuine scope. Rock excavation, a long service run, overhead-line clearance issues or an awkward board location may require more labour and equipment. On the other hand, planning electrical and excavation work together can remove duplicated mobilisation, prevent trench clashes and reduce the chance of reopening finished ground.
The cheapest quote is not always the lowest project cost. A poorly positioned board, undersized supply or unclear cable route can cost far more in downtime and variations than a properly scoped installation from the outset. Request a clear explanation of what is included, what is assumed and which network or approval costs sit outside the contractor's scope.
A practical site checklist
Before temporary power is switched on, make sure the site has a clear connection plan, suitable board location, adequate capacity for expected loads and protected cable routes. Confirm that safety switches are in place, access is controlled and no leads are exposed to traffic, water or damage.
During the build, inspect the setup after weather events and major site changes. Keep temporary electrical work separate from permanent fit-off where practical, and bring in a licensed electrician whenever the supply needs to change.
Temporary construction power should make a job easier, not introduce another unknown. With the electrical layout and ground works planned together, your site has a safer, cleaner path from first dig to final fit-off.
