How to Choose a Switchboard for Renovations

A renovation can look finished long before the electrical system is ready to support it. New kitchens, air conditioning, induction cooktops, pool equipment, home offices and EV chargers all add demand - and an older switchboard can quickly become the weak point.

Knowing how to choose a switchboard for renovations is not about picking the biggest cabinet or adding more breakers than you need. It is about building a safe, compliant electrical centre that suits the property now and leaves room for what comes next.

Start with the renovation scope, not the old board

The existing switchboard tells an electrician where the property has been, not necessarily where it needs to go. A small board that was adequate for original lighting circuits and a conventional electric oven may not have capacity for a modern renovation.

Before selecting a switchboard, map out every electrical addition in the project. This includes obvious items such as new power points, lighting and appliances, but also the loads that are often decided later: split-system air conditioning, ceiling fans, outdoor entertaining areas, a shed, electric gates, solar batteries or EV charging.

A kitchen renovation is a common example. Replacing a gas cooktop with induction, adding a wall oven, dishwasher, microwave, rangehood and extra bench power can substantially change the electrical load and circuit layout. The answer may be a switchboard upgrade, a larger board, or a broader assessment of the property’s supply.

Good planning at this stage avoids a frustrating result: fresh plaster, new cabinetry and painted walls being opened up later because the electrical system was treated as an afterthought.

Check the condition and capacity of the existing installation

A licensed electrician should inspect the current switchboard before any decision is made. Age alone does not automatically mean a board must be replaced, but older equipment can raise clear safety, compliance and capacity concerns.

Warning signs include ceramic fuses, rewireable fuse wire, damaged enclosures, loose or corroded components, crowded wiring, circuit breakers that trip regularly, signs of overheating, or no residual current device protection. If the board contains asbestos-backed panels, it needs careful assessment and a properly managed replacement process.

Capacity is about more than the number of empty spaces. The incoming supply, main switch rating, cable sizes, earthing arrangement and expected electrical demand all need to be considered together. Adding circuits to a crowded board may appear cheaper upfront, but it is not a good outcome if the main supply or internal components are already at their limit.

For homes and businesses across the Mid North Coast, coastal conditions also matter. Moisture, salt air and corrosion can shorten the working life of equipment, particularly where switchboards are exposed, located in garages or installed near outdoor areas. A suitable enclosure and quality installation matter just as much as the components inside it.

Choose the right size switchboard for future work

A switchboard should have enough ways for the circuits required today, plus sensible spare capacity. This is one of the areas where trying to save a small amount can cost more later.

As a practical rule, a renovation should not leave a new switchboard completely full. Spare ways give you options if you later add solar and battery equipment, an EV charger, a pool pump, workshop circuits, extra air conditioning or an extension. They also make future fault-finding and alterations more straightforward.

The right size depends on the property. A compact unit may suit a small apartment renovation with limited changes. A family home with a new kitchen, separate living zones, outdoor power and planned solar will usually need more room. Commercial fit-outs can require further separation for lighting, power, refrigeration, equipment and safety systems.

Your electrician should explain the proposed circuit schedule in plain language. You should be able to see what each circuit is for, why certain appliances need dedicated circuits, and how much room remains for future additions. Clear labelling is not a minor detail - it makes the system safer and easier to manage for every person who works on the property later.

Prioritise safety devices and compliant protection

Modern switchboards use circuit breakers and residual current devices, commonly called safety switches, to protect people, wiring and equipment. The exact protection required depends on the installation and applicable Australian electrical rules, but a renovation is the right time to bring the affected electrical work up to current standards.

Safety switches are designed to disconnect power quickly where there is a fault that could cause electric shock. Circuit breakers protect circuits from overloads and short circuits. Many modern installations use RCBOs, which combine both functions for individual circuits.

There are trade-offs. Individual RCBO protection can cost more than a basic shared arrangement, but it can reduce the chance that one fault takes out multiple circuits. If a fault occurs on an outdoor power circuit, for example, you do not want to lose lighting and refrigeration throughout the house unnecessarily.

Surge protection is another worthwhile conversation, particularly where a renovation includes smart controls, new appliances, solar equipment, security systems or home office gear. It is not a substitute for good wiring or proper earthing, but it can provide another layer of protection against voltage surges.

A compliant switchboard installation should also include correct earthing, appropriate main switching, circuit identification and a suitable enclosure. These details are not optional extras. They are part of a system designed to operate safely under normal use and respond properly when something goes wrong.

Think about where the switchboard sits

The location of a switchboard affects safety, access and the cost of the job. It needs to be accessible for operation, inspection and emergency isolation, while protected from damage, excessive weather exposure and unsuitable environments.

Renovations sometimes change a garage into a living room, enclose a verandah or rework entry areas. That can leave an existing board in an awkward position or inside a space where it no longer makes practical sense. Relocating it may add cost, especially if supply cables need to be extended or underground service runs are involved, but it can be the right long-term decision.

Where a project includes a detached garage, studio, shed, pool area or new outdoor structure, consider whether a sub-board is more practical than running every new circuit back to the main switchboard. This depends on distance, load, cable routes and future use. Coordinating trenching, conduit installation and electrical works at the same time keeps the site moving and avoids digging up completed landscaping later.

Match the board to your energy plans

Solar, batteries and EV chargers are no longer niche upgrades. Even if they are not part of the current renovation, it pays to consider them while the switchboard is being designed.

Solar systems require suitable connection arrangements and protection. Battery systems may require additional equipment and clear space. EV chargers can place a significant and sustained load on the property, particularly when combined with electric cooking, hot water and air conditioning.

You do not need to install every future technology now. You do need a board that can accommodate it without forcing another major upgrade. Ask your electrician whether the proposed switchboard has practical provision for solar, battery or EV charging, and whether the existing supply is likely to support those plans.

For some homes, load management may be part of the answer. This can help manage demand where several high-load appliances may operate at once. The right approach depends on household habits, supply capacity and the equipment being installed.

Do not choose on price alone

Switchboard quotes can vary because the scope varies. One quote may cover a straightforward replacement, while another includes new safety devices, additional circuits, earthing upgrades, asbestos management, relocation work or supply changes. Comparing a single bottom-line figure without understanding the inclusions can lead to surprises.

Ask what equipment is being installed, how circuits will be protected, whether the enclosure has spare capacity, and whether any defects or supply limitations have been identified. A clear quote should explain the work without burying you in jargon.

Electrical work must be completed by a licensed contractor, with the required testing and certification provided at the end of the job. That protects the property, the people using it and the value of the renovation.

A well-chosen switchboard rarely gets attention once the walls are finished and the lights are on. That is exactly the point. Plan it properly, use licensed professionals and give the renovation an electrical foundation built to last.
