A new power supply, water line, data cable or shed connection can look straightforward on a plan. On site, the work lives or dies by what happens below ground. This guide to trenching for new connections explains the practical decisions that protect your property, keep the job compliant and avoid the expensive surprise of striking an existing service.

For homeowners, builders and project managers, trenching is not simply digging a narrow hole between two points. It is a coordinated part of the build. The route needs to suit the connection, the depth needs to suit the service, existing infrastructure must be found before excavation starts, and the trench needs to be backfilled in a way that protects the installation for years to come.

Start with the connection, not the excavator

The right trench starts with a clear answer to one question: what is being installed, and where does it need to finish? An underground electrical feed to a new shed has different requirements to a communications conduit, drainage line or water supply. If the project involves more than one service, the route and sequencing need to be planned together rather than worked out in the dirt.

This is where using a contractor with both electrical and excavation capability can save time. The electrical design determines cable size, conduit, entry points and separation from other services. The earthworks side determines access, soil conditions, trench profile, spoil placement and how the ground will be reinstated. When those decisions are made separately, small mismatches can lead to delays, rework or a trench that has to be opened twice.

Before marking a route, confirm the location of the supply point, switchboard or meter position, the final connection point, proposed structures, driveways, retaining walls and landscaping. Think ahead as well. If you are trenching to a shed, granny flat or commercial outbuilding, it may be sensible to allow for additional conduit or capacity while the ground is open. The extra planning is usually minor compared with returning later to excavate through a finished yard, slab edge or driveway.

Locate every existing service first

The most important rule in trenching is simple: never assume a clear patch of ground is clear underground. Older properties can have undocumented electrical cables, water pipes, sewer lines, stormwater, gas, communications cables and private services that do not appear where you expect them.

Service information should be obtained before digging, but plans are only a starting point. They can indicate the presence of network services, not guarantee the exact alignment or depth of every line on a property. Private pipes and cables, particularly on older rural and semi-rural blocks, may not be shown at all.

A competent site inspection considers visible clues such as meter boxes, pits, taps, downpipes, inspection openings, overhead service entry points and old trenches. Services should be marked, and excavation near known or suspected assets should be approached carefully. Mechanical excavation is efficient in open ground, but close to a service the method may need to change to hand digging or non-destructive excavation.

Striking a cable or pipe is not just a repair cost. It can cause serious injury, disrupt power or water to a property, delay other trades and create a compliance issue. A careful start is faster than an emergency repair.

Plan the route for access, protection and future use

The shortest route is not always the best route. A direct line may cross a future driveway, pass too close to drainage, run through a tree root zone or create a difficult termination at the building. A good trench route balances distance with practical protection.

Keep the route as straight and accessible as the site allows. Avoid unnecessary bends, especially for conduits that will need cables pulled through later. Consider where machinery can work without damaging gardens, fences, pavements or finished surfaces. On sloping blocks around the Coffs Coast and Mid North Coast, water movement and erosion also need attention. A trench on a slope can become a path for water if it is poorly backfilled or left open during wet weather.

The route should also consider traffic loading. A service that crosses a driveway, access track or area used by machinery may need additional protection or a different installation method. This is not a detail to leave until after the trench is dug. The cable, conduit and trench construction all need to suit the conditions above them.

Depth is set by the service and site conditions

There is no one depth that suits every trench. Required cover varies according to the service type, whether it is in conduit, the surrounding ground, separation from other utilities and whether vehicles will pass over the area. Electrical work must meet the applicable Australian standards and network requirements, while plumbing and communications work have their own rules.

The practical point is to establish the required depth before excavation begins, then check it as the trench progresses. Ground levels can change across a block, particularly where there are slopes, building pads or recently placed fill. Measuring from an assumed level can leave a service too shallow once the site is finished.

A trench that is deeper than required is not automatically better. It increases excavation, backfill and restoration work, and can create other complications in unstable or wet ground. The target is the correct depth, consistent support and suitable protection for the intended connection.

Excavate with stable, clean trench conditions

Once the route is marked and services are addressed, excavation should be controlled rather than rushed. The width only needs to suit the service, conduit and safe installation method. Excessively wide trenches create more disturbance, more spoil and more reinstatement work.

Spoil should be placed where it will not fall back into the trench, block site access, damage lawns or enter stormwater paths. Keep plant clear of trench edges where ground is soft or where the excavation could collapse. Wet soil, sand, fill and disturbed ground all behave differently, and conditions can change quickly after rain.

Open trenches need to be managed as a site hazard. Do not leave them unprotected where children, residents, workers or visitors can access them. Barriers, covers, signage and a clear plan for securing the site matter, even on a small residential job. If the trench is deep enough to require entry, excavation safety requirements become more serious and should be handled by people who understand ground stability and safe access.

For electrical connections, the trench base should be free of sharp rocks, building rubble and other material that can damage conduit or cable. If the natural ground is rough, a suitable bedding layer may be needed. The installation should sit evenly, without hard points or unsupported sections that can cause damage as the ground settles.

Install protection before backfilling

The underground service is only as durable as the protection around it. Depending on the connection, this can include conduit, bedding, marker tape, mechanical protection and correctly placed warning tape. The exact arrangement depends on the service and applicable requirements, but the principle is consistent: make the service easy to identify and hard to damage.

Do not use the trench as a dumping ground for rocks, broken concrete or surplus construction material. Initial backfill around a cable or conduit should be suitable material placed carefully so the service is not displaced or crushed. After that, the trench can be backfilled in layers and compacted appropriately for the ground and the finished surface.

Compaction matters most where the trench crosses paths, lawns, paved areas and driveways. Poorly compacted backfill settles over time, leaving depressions that hold water or crack paving. Over-compacting in the wrong place can also damage a service. The method should suit the material, trench width and surrounding surface.

Photograph and record the work

Before the trench is closed, take clear photographs showing the route, depth reference points, conduits and warning tape. Measure the route from fixed features such as building corners or fence lines, and keep those records with the property documents.

This is a small step with real value. Years later, when you install a garden bed, replace a fence, build an extension or add another connection, accurate records reduce guesswork. They also help future contractors plan work without putting existing services at risk.

Reinstatement is part of a finished job

A trench is not finished when the backfill reaches ground level. The site should be left safe, functional and ready for its intended use. That may mean restoring turf, levelling a garden area, preparing for concrete, repairing a gravel accessway or matching the surrounding ground profile so water drains correctly.

The right finish depends on the project. A temporary construction site may only need a compacted, trafficable surface, while a completed home renovation needs a cleaner restoration. Be realistic about what excavation can do to established lawns and landscaping. On a tight or highly finished site, a smaller machine, careful spoil management and a more considered route may cost more upfront but reduce restoration work afterwards.
