A new pool can look simple from the backyard: a pump, lights, perhaps a heater and a clean paved surround. Under the ground, it is a different story. Excavation for pool power needs to protect electrical cabling, work around drainage and existing services, and leave enough room for the rest of the build. Get the route wrong early and the fix can mean lifting concrete, damaging landscaping or delaying the handover.
For homeowners, builders and pool contractors, the cleanest approach is to plan the electrical and excavation scope together before the first trench is cut. It saves time, avoids crossed wires between trades, and gives the finished pool area a safer, neater result.
Why pool power needs proper excavation planning
Pool equipment is rarely powered by a single cable. Depending on the design, the electrical work may include the circulation pump, chlorinator, filtration controls, LED lighting, a heat pump, spa equipment, outdoor lighting, power to an equipment shed, and provision for future accessories. Each item affects the size and route of the electrical supply.
The excavation has to account for more than the shortest line from the house switchboard to the equipment pad. A direct route might pass through a future retaining wall, a planned concrete path, tree roots, stormwater lines or an area needed for machinery access. On sloping Coffs Coast blocks, water movement and ground conditions can add another layer of planning.
The aim is not simply to dig a trench. It is to create a protected, compliant service route that suits the pool layout, avoids known services and remains practical when maintenance is needed years later.
Start with the pool equipment location
The equipment area should be confirmed before electrical routes are marked out. This is where pumps, filters, controllers and, in many cases, heating equipment will sit. It needs safe access, adequate ventilation where required, sensible drainage and enough clearance for servicing.
Once the equipment location is locked in, the electrical contractor can assess the supply path from the main switchboard or a suitable sub-board. A load calculation may be required, particularly where a property already has air conditioning, solar, electric cooking, a workshop or other high-demand equipment. A pool heat pump can materially change the power requirements, so it should not be treated as an afterthought.
A switchboard upgrade or additional protection may be needed before the pool is connected. Finding this out at the planning stage is far better than discovering it when the pool is full, the paving is finished and the electrician is ready to commission the equipment.
Allow for what comes next
A practical electrical design makes provision for likely upgrades. That might mean spare capacity at the board, an appropriately sized conduit, or an additional pathway for garden lighting, a spa, an outdoor kitchen or a future shed. There is a cost to allowing for growth, but it is usually modest compared with reopening a finished pool surround.
Future-proofing is not about installing equipment you may never use. It is about avoiding a layout that gives you no sensible options later.
What happens before excavation for pool power
Before excavation begins, the site should be inspected and services located. Underground water, sewer, stormwater, communications, gas and existing electrical cables can all be present, including services that are not obvious from the surface. Plans and service information are useful, but they are not a substitute for careful on-site investigation.
The proposed route should also be checked against the full construction sequence. Pool builders may need access around the excavation for formwork, plumbing, coping, fencing and concrete. Landscapers may need to install drainage, garden edging or retaining work. A trench opened too early can be damaged by heavy traffic; one left too late can hold up several trades.
A coordinated contractor can mark the route, excavate it cleanly, install the required underground pathway, and manage backfilling once the electrical work is ready. That reduces the usual handover gap between an excavation operator and an electrician, where each trade assumes the other has covered a detail.
Cable routes, depth and protection
The exact installation method depends on the cable type, ground conditions, route, applicable electrical rules and the equipment being supplied. There is no reliable one-size-fits-all trench depth for a pool project. The correct depth and mechanical protection must be determined for the job, not guessed from something seen on another site.
In general, underground electrical work requires an appropriate cable system or conduit arrangement, mechanical protection where necessary, warning tape and careful backfilling. The route should be kept clear of sharp rubble and materials that could damage the installation. It must also be identified and documented so it can be found before future digging.
Pool zones introduce further requirements around where electrical equipment and wiring can be placed relative to the water. These rules are there for good reason. Water, bare feet, damaged insulation and unsuitable equipment are a dangerous combination. A licensed electrician should design and install the electrical components, select the correct protective devices and test the installation before energising it.
Do not assume an extension lead, an exposed temporary cable or a shallow DIY trench is an acceptable shortcut while the project is being finished. Temporary arrangements around pools need the same careful approach to safety as permanent work.
Drainage and ground conditions matter
A trench can become a path for water if the site is not considered properly. In wet ground, water may track along disturbed soil or collect around the equipment area. That can create muddy access, undermine finishes and make maintenance unpleasant.
The electrical pathway itself needs to be protected, while drainage should be designed as a separate part of the site works. Where the pool equipment pad, retaining walls or paved surfaces change the way water moves across the block, the excavation plan should work with the stormwater plan rather than against it.
This is particularly relevant on coastal and hinterland properties where ground can vary across a single block. Sand, clay, rock, fill and sloping terrain all affect how a trench is excavated, supported and reinstated. Rock may require additional plant time; unstable or wet ground may need a different approach. Clear site assessment helps keep pricing transparent and prevents surprises after machinery arrives.
Coordinate the trench with the pool build
The best time to run underground power is usually before permanent hardscape finishes are installed, but after the main layout and levels are confirmed. That timing varies by project. On a new build, the electrical route may be included with broader underground service works. On a backyard renovation, access restrictions and existing landscaping may drive the sequence.
Good coordination considers a few practical points:
Keep the route out of areas likely to be excavated again for fencing, drainage or retaining work.
Protect exposed conduits and cable entry points while pool construction continues.
Leave service loops, access and clear labelling at the equipment end where appropriate.
Backfill and compact carefully so finished paving, turf or paths do not settle later.
These details are not glamorous, but they are the difference between work that looks finished on handover day and work that stays dependable after a few wet seasons.
Choose one contractor where the scopes overlap
Using separate trades can work well when the project is tightly managed and every responsibility is clear. But pool power often sits directly between electrical and earthworks. The excavator needs to understand the approved route and protection requirements. The electrician needs to understand site levels, access, soil conditions and the practical limits of the trench.
When one licensed and insured contractor can manage both scopes, there are fewer handovers and less risk of rework. The excavation can be sized accurately, the underground electrical installation can be coordinated at the right time, and any on-site changes can be addressed without waiting for another trade to attend.

A capable contractor will answer these questions plainly. They will explain what is included, flag variables such as rock or unknown services, and avoid promising a fixed outcome before the site has been properly assessed.
Pool power is easiest to forget when the shell, tiles and landscaping are taking shape. It is also one of the hardest things to correct once those finishes are in place. Plan the underground work early, use licensed electrical expertise, and treat the trench as part of the finished pool system - not a hole to be filled at the end of the job.
