Why Lights Flicker and When to Call an Electrician

A light that flickers once during a storm may be nothing more than a momentary supply disturbance. A light that flickers every night when the kettle, air conditioner or workshop equipment starts is a different story. If you are wondering why lights flicker, the pattern matters. It can point to something as simple as a loose globe or as serious as a failing connection in your switchboard or electrical supply.

Flickering is not always an emergency, but it should not be ignored when it is frequent, getting worse or affecting more than one light. Electrical faults tend to reveal themselves in small ways before they cause heat damage, equipment failure or a loss of power. A licensed electrician can trace the cause safely and make sure the repair is compliant and built to last.

Why lights flicker in homes and businesses

Lights need a steady electrical connection and stable voltage to operate properly. Flickering happens when either one is interrupted or fluctuates. The fault may sit inside the fitting, on the circuit, at the switchboard or, less commonly, on the incoming supply.

The quickest clue is scope. One flickering fitting usually suggests a local issue with the globe, lamp holder, switch or dimmer. Several lights flickering in the same area can indicate a circuit issue. If lights across the whole property dim, brighten or pulse, the cause may be a loose main connection, overloaded equipment or a supply problem that needs prompt investigation.

A loose or ageing globe

A loose LED globe is one of the simplest causes. Turn the power off at the switch, allow the globe to cool and check that it is seated correctly. If it continues to flicker, try a quality replacement globe that is the correct type and wattage for the fitting.

Cheap or ageing LED globes can also fail prematurely. Their internal drivers may not handle heat well, particularly in enclosed downlights, bathrooms or outdoor fittings exposed to weather. Replacing the globe can solve the issue, but repeated failures in the same fitting warrant a proper inspection.

Incompatible dimmers and LED lighting

Many older dimmers were designed for halogen or incandescent lamps. LEDs use far less power and need compatible control gear, so an older dimmer can cause buzzing, flashing, a limited dimming range or lights that will not fully switch off.

This is a common issue after upgrading to LED downlights while retaining existing switches. The fix may be an LED-rated dimmer, compatible globes or a different lighting arrangement. The right answer depends on the fittings, load and how the circuit has been installed, rather than a one-size-fits-all replacement.

Loose connections at a fitting or switch

A loose terminal can interrupt power as the fitting warms up, cools down or vibrates. You may notice a particular light flickers when you touch the switch, open a door or use an appliance nearby. A faulty switch mechanism, damaged lamp holder or loose cable connection can all produce the same symptom.

Do not remove switches, pull apart fittings or tighten electrical terminals yourself. Loose connections can generate heat and arcing inside a wall, ceiling space or fitting where damage is not immediately visible. This is licensed electrical work.

Voltage drop when large equipment starts

Motors and high-demand appliances draw extra current when they start. Air conditioners, pumps, refrigeration, welders, compressors and some power tools can cause a brief dip in voltage, especially on an older circuit or a property with limited capacity.

A small, occasional dip can occur in some installations. Noticeable flickering every time equipment starts is not something to accept as normal. The circuit may be undersized, overloaded, poorly connected or due for a switchboard upgrade. Businesses should take this seriously, as unstable supply can affect refrigeration, computers, point-of-sale systems and sensitive equipment.

Overloaded circuits and ageing switchboards

Older homes and commercial spaces were not designed around current electrical demand. More air conditioning, induction cooking, home offices, EV charging, workshop tools and entertainment equipment all add load. If too much is running on one circuit, lights may dim or flicker and breakers may trip.

A dated switchboard can also make fault-finding harder. Modern safety switches, correctly rated circuit protection and clear labelling improve safety and make future additions easier to manage. An upgrade is not always required, but an inspection gives you a clear picture of the condition and capacity of the installation.

Signs the flicker needs urgent attention

Turn off the affected circuit where it is safe to do so and arrange a licensed electrician promptly if flickering comes with a burning smell, buzzing from a switchboard, scorch marks, a hot switch plate or repeated tripping. These signs can indicate overheating or arcing.

You should also act quickly if lights suddenly become much brighter and then dimmer, particularly throughout the property. Large voltage swings can damage appliances and may be linked to a loose neutral connection. Avoid using major appliances until the fault has been checked.

If the issue affects neighbours as well, or follows a power outage or storm, contact your electricity distributor to report a possible network fault. If it is limited to your home, shed, shop or site, start with a licensed electrician. The electrician can determine whether the problem is on your installation or upstream at the supply.

What you can check safely before booking

You do not need to diagnose the electrical system yourself, but a few observations will help speed up the visit. Note whether one light or multiple lights are affected, whether the flicker occurs at certain times, and what is running when it happens. A video of the flicker can be useful, especially when the fault is intermittent.

You can also check obvious non-electrical factors. Make sure the globe is suitable for the fitting, look for water ingress around outdoor lights, and consider whether the problem began after changing lamps, installing a dimmer or adding a high-load appliance. Keep hands clear of exposed wiring and do not reset a breaker repeatedly if it continues to trip.

For builders and renovators, flickering lights are also worth raising before linings are closed or final handover takes place. It is easier and more cost-effective to test circuits, lighting controls and load capacity while access is available than after finishes are complete.

How an electrician finds the real cause

A proper diagnosis is more than replacing a globe and hoping for the best. A licensed electrician will inspect the affected fitting and controls, test circuit connections, check voltage and load behaviour, and assess the switchboard where required. They will also look for issues such as unsuitable dimmers, heat-affected terminals, poor previous work or circuits that no longer suit the way the property is used.

For properties with new sheds, extensions, outdoor lighting, pumps or underground services, the electrical and site-work components need to be coordinated.
