Electrical Service Runs Done Right on Your Site

A new shed is ready for power. A granny flat needs its own supply. The pump, gate, outdoor lighting or commercial fit-out cannot move forward until the cable route is sorted. Electrical service runs are the part of the job that connects the plan to a working, safe installation - and they need to be treated as more than a trench in the ground.

When underground electrical work is planned properly, it protects the cable, avoids clashes with other services and keeps the rest of the build moving. When it is rushed, it can create costly rework, damaged services and compliance issues that surface long after the trench has been filled.

What are electrical service runs?

An electrical service run is the route and installation work required to carry electrical supply from one point to another. On a residential property, that might mean running power from the main switchboard to a detached garage, pool equipment, workshop or secondary dwelling. On a commercial or light civil site, it could involve supplying site amenities, external lighting, pumps, machinery or a new tenancy.

The term can cover more than the cable itself. Depending on the project, the scope may include trenching, excavation, conduit installation, cable pulling, pits, warning tape, backfilling, switchboard work, testing and connection by a licenced electrician. The exact setup depends on the load required, the length of the run, site conditions and the equipment being supplied.

That is why electrical service runs work best when the electrical and earthworks sides are planned together from the start. There is little value in digging a neat trench if the route is wrong, the conduit is undersized or the cable cannot be installed and tested correctly afterwards.

Start with the load, not the trench

The first question is not, “Where can we dig?” It is, “What will this supply need to do now and later?” A single light and a couple of power points place very different demands on a system than a workshop with welders, a large pump, air conditioning or electric vehicle charging.

A licenced electrician can assess the intended load, the capacity of the existing switchboard and whether the installation needs upgrades or protection changes. Cable size, voltage drop and circuit protection must be considered before excavation begins. A long run across a rural block may need a different approach to a short run beside a house, even if both are feeding the same equipment.

Future use matters as well. If you are already opening the ground for a shed, driveway gate or outdoor entertaining area, it may make sense to allow for extra conduit capacity or related services while access is easy. It is not always necessary to overbuild, but it is worth making an informed decision before concrete is poured, landscaping is finished or a new driveway goes in.

Route planning prevents expensive surprises

The best cable route is rarely just the shortest line between two points. It needs to work around existing underground assets, drainage, retaining walls, trees, building footings and the practical needs of the property.

Before excavation, the site should be checked for known and unknown services. This includes locating utility infrastructure and reviewing any available site plans. On older properties around the Coffs Coast and Mid North Coast, previous work is not always where you would expect it to be. A careful approach is far cheaper than striking a water line, communications cable or existing electrical service.

The route also needs to suit future access. Running a cable directly beneath an area likely to be excavated later can turn a simple project into a problem. Likewise, a route through a low-lying or poorly drained section of ground may require particular attention to installation method, drainage and protection.

Ground conditions change the job

Soft soil, clay, rock, fill, tree roots and wet ground all affect how a service run is installed. Coastal properties can have sandy ground that moves easily, while hinterland sites may involve rock, steep grades or tight access. These conditions influence excavation time, plant selection, spoil management and how the trench is finished.

A clean, accurately excavated trench reduces disruption to lawns, paths and surrounding structures. It also gives the electrician the right working space to install the system safely. This is where having excavation capability alongside electrical expertise can remove the usual handover issues between separate trades.

Compliance is built into the installation

Underground power work is not a DIY job. Electrical installation must be completed, tested and certified by appropriately licenced professionals, with work carried out to applicable Australian standards, network requirements and site-specific conditions.

Depth, separation from other services, mechanical protection, conduit selection, warning measures and terminations all matter. There is no one-size-fits-all depth or cable method that applies to every job. Requirements can change according to the cable type, location, property layout and whether the run crosses areas exposed to vehicles or construction activity.

Good workmanship is not just about meeting the minimum. It is about leaving a clear, protected route that has been properly tested before the ground is reinstated. Taking photos and recording the route before backfilling can also save time down the track when planning landscaping, fencing or further works.

Coordinate the electrical and civil work early

A service run often sits in the middle of several trades. Builders may be waiting on power for a new structure. Plumbers may need their own trench route. Concreters need to know where conduits cross. Landscapers need to avoid damaging completed work.

The practical answer is sequencing. Establish the route and required levels, complete the excavation, install conduits or other required infrastructure, pull and terminate cable at the right stage, then backfill and restore the area. Each job has its own order, but clear coordination prevents the common mistake of digging twice or reopening finished ground.

For builders and project managers, a contractor who understands both sides of the work can make that process simpler. Do not bury problems for later

The right approach is to confirm the electrical design first, expose and protect existing services, use suitable materials, test the installation and reinstate the site with care. It may take a little more planning at the front end, but it protects the build budget and the finished property.

What affects the cost of a service run?

The cost is driven by more than metres of trench. Distance is a factor, but so are the required cable size, switchboard capacity, depth and route complexity, ground conditions, access for machinery and whether other services need to be worked around.

Rock excavation, difficult access, long cable distances and reinstatement around finished landscaping can all add time. On the other hand, combining electrical work with trenching, site preparation or footing work can be more efficient than arranging separate contractors with separate mobilisations.

A useful quote should clearly explain what is included: excavation, electrical materials, installation, testing, certification, backfilling and any allowances for unknown ground conditions. Transparent scope helps everyone understand where costs sit and avoids surprises once work starts.

Plan the run before the site closes up

If you are building, renovating or adding infrastructure, raise the power route early. It is easier to install a properly designed service run before slabs, driveways, gardens and finished surfaces lock the site into place.

The same applies to smaller jobs. A well-planned supply to a shed or pump can prevent overloaded circuits, extension leads across the yard and repeated patch-up work. Get the route, capacity and ground work sorted properly, and the power you need will be there when the rest of the project is ready for it.
