Power planning is not just about adding enough general power outlets to a tenancy. Get it right and the fitout runs cleaner, safer and with fewer variations. Get it wrong and the rectification bill usually lands late, when changes cost more.

That early planning also needs to account for compliance, board capacity, cable pathways, emergency and exit lighting, metering requirements, and whether the existing supply is genuinely fit for purpose. Front-of-house spaces need power where customer-facing gear actually sits. Back-of-house areas need enough capacity for refrigeration, prep equipment, charging stations, cleaning gear and admin use. A fitout is often judged by what people can see, but the switchboard is where a lot of the success or failure sits. If the board has no spare capacity, poor labelling, ageing protection devices or limited room for future circuits, it can hold the whole project back.

Commercial tenancies rarely come as blank canvases. Existing slabs, ceilings, risers, walls and service entry points can all affect what is possible and what it costs. If cable routes are tight or the incoming supply location is awkward, power planning needs to account for that early.

This is especially relevant where underground electrical runs, trenching or site works are part of the job. New detached buildings, external plant, signs, amenities blocks or supply relocations can require coordinated excavation as well as electrical installation. There is also a practical balance between current needs and future-proofing. Overbuilding every job is not smart, but neither is leaving no room for growth.
