Site Cut | Bellingen
Project type
Excavation / Earthworks Project
Date
2025
Location
Bellingen, NSW, Australia.
Project Overview
A precision earthworks project located in the rugged bushland of Bellingen. The objective was to create a perfectly level, structural bench for a large-capacity water tank on a steeply sloped section of the property. The site was strategically selected to allow for a reliable gravity-feed system to the main residence.
Excavation & Bench Styling
Working in the Bellingen hinterland requires a deep understanding of local soil types and terrain stability. This project involved:
Tricky Terrain Navigation: Utilising tight-access excavation techniques to reach a remote section of the bush without unnecessary disturbance to the surrounding environment.
Precision Site Cut: Excavating a level "bench" into the hillside. Accuracy was critical here—even a slight tilt can compromise the structural integrity of a full water tank weighing several tonnes.
Gravity-Feed Optimisation: Precise height surveying to ensure the tank was positioned at the optimal elevation to provide consistent water pressure to the home without the need for constant pumping.
Drainage & Site Stability
In a high-rainfall area like Bellingen, a site cut is only as good as its drainage.
Erosion Control: Engineered the cut with a slight "fall" and integrated drainage channels to divert surface water runoff away from the tank base, preventing washouts.
Compaction & Base Prep: Ensuring the subgrade was heavily compacted and topped with a specific metal base to provide a stable, non-reactive foundation for the tank’s weight.
