A power trench can look like a straightforward excavation job until it crosses an existing water line, fills with rainwater, or leaves no room for compliant cable protection. Knowing how to prepare a trench for power properly saves delays, protects your property and gives the electrician a clean, safe path to complete the installation.
For a new shed, pool equipment, gate motor, granny flat or commercial service run, the excavation and electrical work need to be planned as one job. The trench is not just a hole in the ground. It is part of the electrical system and needs to be set out, excavated and backfilled with care.
Start with the electrical plan, not the excavator
Before any soil is moved, confirm what the new supply needs to power. A small circuit for garden lighting is a different job from a submain feeding a workshop, secondary dwelling or commercial fit-out. The cable size, conduit type, route, protection requirements and termination points all affect the trench design.
A licensed electrician should determine the electrical scope before excavation starts. They can assess the required load, identify where the cable needs to enter buildings or equipment, and make sure the installation will meet current Australian wiring rules and local network requirements.
This is also the time to think ahead. If the trench is being opened for a shed supply, it may be sensible to allow for lighting, data, future solar equipment, a water pump or electric vehicle charging. Adding spare conduit while the ground is open is usually far more cost-effective than digging the same area up later.
Locate every existing underground service
The first rule of trenching is simple: never assume the ground is clear. Underground power, communications, water, sewer, gas, stormwater and private services can all be present, including services that do not appear on standard plans.
Request utility information through Dial Before You Dig before the job begins. These plans are a starting point, not proof of the exact service location. Private cables and pipes, such as a supply to an old shed, pool or bore pump, may not be shown.
Mark known services on site, then expose the area carefully by hand where necessary. Mechanical excavation near an identified service needs a controlled approach. A quick trenching job is never worth a damaged cable, burst pipe or serious safety incident.
On older Coffs Coast properties, it is common to find unrecorded service runs, previous renovations and drainage installed at unexpected depths. Allow time for this investigation, especially around established homes, driveways and landscaped areas.
Set out the route with access and drainage in mind
The shortest route is not always the best route. A good cable path avoids likely excavation zones, large tree roots, drainage channels, retaining walls and areas likely to be altered in future. It should also allow practical access for excavation equipment without tearing up more of the site than necessary.
Mark the proposed alignment from the switchboard or supply point to the final connection point. Check where the cable will rise out of the ground and enter the building, pillar, equipment enclosure or pit. Tight bends, poorly positioned conduit entries and exposed sections are much easier to fix on paper than after the trench is open.
Consider water movement as well. Low areas can hold water, while sloping blocks may require careful grading so surface runoff does not scour newly backfilled ground. If the power trench shares a corridor with other services, the final layout must allow the correct separation and protection for each one.
Confirm trench depth before digging
There is no one depth that suits every underground power run. Required cover depends on factors including the cable system, conduit, site conditions, traffic loading, whether the route crosses a driveway, and the relevant Australian Standards and authority requirements.
A trench through a garden bed is treated differently from one below a driveway used by cars, utes or delivery vehicles. Under-built areas, public zones and commercial sites can bring additional requirements. The electrician should confirm the required depth and protection before the machine arrives.
Do not rely on a depth from a neighbour's project or a general online diagram. Getting this wrong can mean re-excavation, damaged cable in future or an installation that cannot be signed off. Good preparation is cheaper than doing the trench twice.
Excavate a clean, stable trench for power
Once the route and depth are confirmed, excavate to a consistent grade with enough width to safely install the conduit or cable system. Avoid leaving a rough, uneven base full of rocks, broken concrete, roots and sharp debris. These can damage conduit or create pressure points once the trench is backfilled.
Keep excavated spoil far enough from the edge that it does not fall back in or overload the trench wall. On deeper excavations or unstable ground, trench collapse is a real risk. The safe method may involve battering back the sides, shoring or changing the excavation approach. Conditions after heavy rain can also change quickly.
Where machinery cannot work safely near structures or services, finish the area by hand. Precision matters most at building entries, crossings and known service locations.
Prepare the trench base
The base needs to provide even support. Depending on the approved cable system and ground conditions, this may involve a suitable bedding layer that protects the conduit or cable from sharp material. The electrician will specify what is needed for the installation.
Do not place electrical conduit directly onto rubble, rock or construction waste. It might look acceptable before backfill, but ground settlement and vibration can create problems over time. A clean, prepared base gives the installation a far better chance of lasting.
Install conduit and cable protection correctly
For most underground power work, conduit and mechanical protection are central to the job. Use products suited to underground electrical use and the conditions on site. Conduit needs to be correctly joined, supported where required and arranged with bends that allow cable to be pulled through without damage.
Avoid forcing sharp turns into the route. A cable pull may need a wider bend radius than expected, particularly with larger submains. Leave a draw wire where appropriate and cap open conduit ends so soil, water and insects do not enter before cable installation.
The electrician may also require marker tape or other warning protection above the cable route. This provides a visible warning to anyone excavating in the future before they reach the electrical service. It is a small part of the job with a major safety benefit.
Keep electrical services separate from water, gas, communications and drainage in line with the applicable requirements. Where services need to cross, the detail matters. Correct clearance, protection and sequencing should be resolved by the licensed electrician and excavation contractor, not improvised in the trench.
Inspect before backfilling
Do not rush to cover the work as soon as the conduit is in. This is the point where the route, depth, conduit condition, warning tape and entry points can be checked while everything remains visible.
Take clear photos showing the open trench and key sections of the installation. Record measurements and note the route on your property plans. These records are useful when landscaping, building additions or repairs are planned years down the track.
If an inspection is required, arrange it before backfill. The cable should only be installed, connected and tested by a licensed electrician. For projects involving new mains supply arrangements or network connections, additional approvals may apply.
Backfill in layers and restore the site properly
Backfill should protect the installation rather than damage it. Use suitable material around the conduit or cable system first, free from large rocks and sharp debris. Then place the remaining material in manageable layers and compact it appropriately for the site.
Poor backfill is a common cause of sinkholes, soft paving and damaged turf. Areas under driveways, paths and slabs need particular attention because settlement can become an expensive repair. The right compaction method depends on the soil type, access and the finished surface above.
Finish by restoring levels, drainage and disturbed landscaping. If the trench crosses turf, set aside topsoil where possible so the area can be reinstated cleanly. A well-executed service trench should not leave you with a low strip across the yard after the first wet season.
